Pallet homes fine where they are, says RB council

The Redondo Beach City Council voted Tuesday night to keep the pallet homes, which currently houses formerly unhoused people, where it is on Kingsdale Ave. in North Redondo Beach.
The pallet homes opened in December of last year thanks to pandemic-related relief funding. The plan proposed last October was for them to remain in North Redondo for six months, and then to discuss an extension or relocation. There was some back-and-forth about the northern and southern parts of Redondo Beach sharing the responsibility of hosting the portable housing units.
Redondo Beach residents this year will, for the first time, get a double dose of Independence Day fireworks.
The City Council voted this week to host its traditional fireworks show and also gave the OK for a local business association to hold its own pyrotechnic display after an all-day event.
Both of the displays will light up the night sky on July 4.
The city-sponsored blasts are typically launched out of Seaside Lagoon. But this year, Redondo Beach will shoot them off from land at King Harbor. Not using a barge to shoot them from the water will lessen the risk of losing money if the show has to be cancelled because of unforeseen potential coronavirus surges, said Councilmember Todd Loewenstein.
Both programs were set to expire in June.
The decision to extend the programs, on a combined vote this week, also included a review of both initiatives, during which Redondo Beach revealed the results of its first independent count of those living on the streets.
Los Angeles County has spent years trying to solve its homeless crisis by building shelters and investing in various services, such as job training and mental health care, to help people get and stay off the streets. It also annually counts the number of folks living on the streets or in shelters, which in 2020 was about 66,400 people.

An all-night search involving 12 police departments, helicopters, and drones ended Sunday morning with four suspects being apprehended for their possible connection to a fatal shooting that occurred around 8 p.m. Saturday in South Redondo Beach.
The victim, whose identity has yet to be confirmed, died of multiple gunshot wounds to the upper torso. Officers arrived at the scene after receiving calls about gunshots on the 600 block of North Juanita. The suspects had fled in a vehicle, heading south on Prospect Avenue, then east into the neighborhood between Faye Lane and Susanna Avenue. They then abandoned the vehicle and continued to flee on foot.

The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health has identified the Redondo Beach Performing Arts Center as a potential location for distributing COVID-19 vaccines, first to healthcare practitioners in Los Angeles and ultimately to the general public. Depending on how negotiations between the city and county pan out, the MPOD (Medical Point of Dispensing) could become operational as early as Wednesday.
