Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain has directed the courts of divisional special judges and special judges across the country to hear and dispose of bail petitions and very urgent applications related to criminal cases virtually.
The courts of divisional special judges and special judges will perform the judicial functions strictly following the health guidelines in order to prevent the spread of Covid-19 pandemic.
Md Golam Rabbani, registrar of the Supreme Court s High Court Division, issued a notification today saying that the notification will come into effect from April 25 and will continue till further order.

The Supreme Court today fixed Sunday for hearing a petition filed by Erfan Salim, son of Awami League MP Haji Md Salim, for vacating its stay order on the High Court bail for him in a case filed over attacking a navy officer in October last year.
A full bench of the Appellate Division of the SC headed by Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain set the date after Erfan s lawyers Abdul Baset Majumdar requested the apex court for early hearing on the petition.
1,349 under-trial prisoners released on bail yesterday

A total of 1,349 under-trial prisoners got released from jails after they were granted bail by the subordinate courts and tribunals yesterday (Wednesday).
The courts and tribunals concerned granted them bail after virtually hearing and disposing of 2,831 bail petitions in connection with criminal cases, Supreme Court Spokesman Md Saifur Rahman said in a statement today.
Total 13,607 under trial-prisoners were released from jails after securing bail from virtual courts across the country in last seven working days till yesterday, he said.
Saifur said a total of 23,784 bail petitions of the accused were disposed of during this period.

The High Court Division of the Supreme Court on Thursday issued the directive in line with the chief justice s orders.
The special judges must remotely hold sessions to dispense with bail and other urgent criminal plea on a daily basis, except weekly and public holidays, following the Supreme Court s guidelines on the use of information technology and related matters, the notice said.
Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) today requested Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain to increase the number of virtual High Court benches so that lawyers can move cases during the ongoing restrictions.
