Vacaville hires former Fairfield top cop as interim police chief

VACAVILLE Former Fairfield police Chief Joseph Allio has been hired as the interim chief at the Vacaville Police Department.
He starts his duties Monday, the city announced in a statement released Thursday. Those duties will include working with an outside consultant to audit the department’s internal culture, training, policies, procedures and community engagement.
Allio replaces Acting Chief Ian Schmutzler, who took over when John Carli took accrued time leading up to his formal retirement April 16. He had his formal “walk-out” ceremony Wednesday. Capt. Schmutzler returns to his regular duties in the department.

VACAVILLE Former Fairfield police Chief Joseph Allio has been hired as the interim chief at the Vacaville Police Department.
He starts his duties Monday, the city announced in a statement released Thursday. Those duties will include working with an outside consultant to audit the department’s internal culture, training, policies, procedures and community engagement.
Allio worked at the Fairfield Police Department from 1987 to 2017, serving as chief from 2015 to 2017. He took a leave in 1996 to complete a pastoral internship.
“I look forward to the opportunity to serve my hometown as interim police chief,” Allio said in the city statement.
