Death of Olu of Warri Announced, Successor Chosen

The death of the 20th Olu of Warri, Ogiame Ikenwoli, has been announced and an Olu designate presented.
The announcement was made on Monday at the ancestral home of all Itsekiri, Ode-Itsekiri (Big Warri) by the Iyatsere of Warri kingdom, Chief Johnson Atserunleghe, on behalf of the Itsekiri National Assembly.
Making the announcement at the Assembly of all Itsekiri, the Iyatsere also introduced the Olu-designate, Prince Itieyinoritsetsola Emiko, to the people.
But while announcing the demise of the Olu at the solemn assembly, Chief Atserunleghe broke the symbolic pots containing white native chalks one after the other on the floor, announcing: “Ale-jefun ooo” after each session.

President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Mr. Amaju Pinnick yesterday faulted the position of the Ologbotsere of Warri Kingdom, Chief Ayiri Emami, on the emergence of new Olu of Warri, who succeeded the late monarch, Ogiame Ikenwoli.
Some kingmakers had a few days ago selected Prince Tsola Emiko as the Olu of Warri-designate, a development that did not go down well with the rival group led by Emami, who insisted that picking him was a breach of the rules.
The announcement made by the Iyatsere of Warri Kingdom and acting Chairman of Oluâs Advisory Council, Chief Johnson Atserunleghe, at a traditional ceremony in Ode Itsekiri, had since divided the kingdom into factions.

(AFRICAN EXAMINER) – The Iyatsere of Warri Kingdom, Chief Johnson Atserunleghe, have announced the death of the 20th Olu of Warri, Ogiame Ikenwoli on Monday.
As customary, the announcement of his death was followed by 20 cannon shots indicating that 20 Olus had reigned so far
This was followed by the pronouncement of a mourning period of three lunar months by the Iyatsere.
During this period, there shall be no drumming, dancing or merrymaking and all sons and daughters of the kingdom must tie their wrapper upside down and a mourning period of three lunar months .
Also, an Olu designate, Prince Itieyinoritsetsola Emiko, was announced and introduced to the people.

Descendants of the Itsekiri nation from across the country, yesterday, gathered at Ode-Itsekiri, the ancestral home of the Itsekiri people, to herald the unveiling of the Olu designate, Prince Utieyinoritsetsola Emiko, 37.
The transition ritual began when one of the chiefs gave a short opening remark and then invited the Iyasere, Chief Johnson Atserunleghe, to speak, after which he formally announced the demise of HRM Ogiame Ikenwoli by breaking three native earthen pots containing white native chalks on the floor.
This was followed by the presentation of Omo-Oba, the Olu designate, to the Itsekiri Nation after reading his citation to the assembly.
