STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. Hours after a bill to legalize marijuana was passed in Albany, a memo sent to all NYPD precincts in regard to vehicle searches was celebrated by some and criticized by others.
Cops were instructed against searching trunks and/or other closed containers, such as backpacks, based only on the smell of burnt or unburnt marijuana emanating from the car. The smell of burnt marijuana could be considered probable cause of impairment, at which point officers could search the passenger compartment but not the trunk unless there’s cause to believe it contains evidence of a crime.

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. District Attorney Michael E. McMahon and City Councilman Steven Matteo on Thursday launched the “Slam the Scam” initiative in order to combat “an unfathomable increase” in crooks targeting Staten Islanders recently.
“There has been an unfathomable increase in the number of complaints we’ve received of Staten Islanders falling victim to scams of all types, often resulting in the loss of great sums of money and in some cases entire life savings,” said McMahon. “While my office and the NYPD remain committed to holding scammers accountable when an arrest is made, stopping scams before they happen is key to our success.”
Gun arrests have more than doubled on Staten Island this year. Where were they? What does it mean? (crime analysis)
Updated 5:31 AM;
An AR15 rifle. A machine gun.
These are just some of the scary firearms the New York City Police Department seized from Staten Islanders during the first three months of 2021 as gun arrests more than doubled in the borough compared to the same period last year, according to data from the NYPD.
There have been 43 arrests on the borough this year compared to 17 last.
“It’s good news and bad news. It’s good news that we are making the incarcerations. The D.A.’s team works very, very hard to set high bail, but the bad news is that there are more guns on Staten Island,” Assistant Chief Frank Vega, the NYPD borough commander, said in a recent interview with the Staten Island Advance/SILive.com.
