Springfield Fire Department to host free COVID-19 vaccine Friday

For those on the fence about getting the COVID-19 vaccine, Springfield firefighters are offering to sweeten the deal with a Fire Station Fun Day and Vaccine Clinic later this week for Greene County residents. This event will be 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday, May 7, at Fire Station 8, 1405 S. Scenic Ave. As part of the community s Finish Strong goal, the event aims to help vaccinate 50 percent of eligible residents by Memorial Day. There s no registration required. Anyone ― with or without children ― eligible for the vaccine can stop by Fire Station 8 and receive either the Moderna two-shot vaccine or the one-dose vaccine from Johnson & Johnson, according to the city.

Police sealed off the area after it was found near Grant and Mt. Vernon. Fire Chief David Pennington says the item was not an explosive device. The bomb squad destroyed it just to be safe. The Bomb Squad responded to the area of 500 S. Grant at 7:38 pm Monday in reference to an unattended package in a public area. The item was examined by the Bomb Squad, and no explosive component or threat was associated to the device and no criminal aspect was determined.
