DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN)– Dayton Police hosted a community wide event honoring Chief Richard Biehl who is set to retire after 13 years of service.
Biehl has led the department for over 13 years, which is the third longest tenure of any Dayton police chief. He said throughout his time here in Dayton, there are many sweet memories.
“Quite simply, I am grateful for the opportunity given to me as police chief,” said Biehl. “It’s the support I’ve received from the community, elected officials, city administrators, department directors and the men and women of the Dayton Police Department and our local, state and federal partners. I salute all of you for your overwhelming support and dedication and contributing efforts to make our community a safer place to work, play and gather.”

Dayton Police Chief Biehl announces retirement Cornelius Frolik
Dayton police Chief Richard Biehl is retiring after 13 years on the job, which means the city will seek new leadership at a critical juncture for police reform efforts and at a time when law enforcement is under extra scrutiny.
“It has been the greatest honor in my professional career to serve as Police Chief for the City of Dayton and to work with the Dayton community to improve public safety,” Biehl said.
Lt. Col. Matt Carper will serve as acting police chief following Biehl’s retirement. Carper is in his 29th year with the Dayton Police Department.

DAYTON, Ohio (AP) Dayton police chief Richard Biehl, who led the department s response to a mass shooting in the city s entertainment district in 2019, is retiring.
Biehl said in a statement Tuesday that it was the “greatest honor” in his career to serve as the city s police chief for 13 years, the Dayton Daily News reported.
Mayor Nan Whaley said the community would miss his leadership, the newspaper reported.
“He has shepherded the department through our current police reform process, making sure his officers were committed to listening carefully to residents as they worked together to create recommendations for how police can be more transparent and responsive to residents,” Whaley said.
