and that s the uvalde shooting. you say the way chief arradondo is handling this is horrendous and despicable. tell me about that, please. don, it s despicable. i have great pride in that history and the men and women i served with, and to see how they are handling this situation on the ground at this point is just it s inexplicable, and it s an offense to the families of the victims who were struck down in this tragedy. it s been a series of mis just misinformation essentially, incorrect facts, and ones that are not simply incorrect but also incorrect in a way that seems intentionally designed to to shine the most favorable light upon the law enforcement response, which appears to be a complete
fiction. it s it s horrendous. you know, we saw the police chief, pete arradondo, the school police chief today talking to shimon and claiming he s not going to say anything about the decisions he made or the response he was leading while the families are grieving. and that is essentially hiding behind the grief of families who have lost children. i mean, i don t know that there s anything more despicable than that, but it s really it s an offense to the community and to all of us who are interested. i grew up in a very small town with two red lights. i think they had that when i was there. it was really small. everybody knew everybody. could it be i think one of two things. either it s incompetence, right, whatever it is they handled it wrong according to everyone involved, all of our experts here on cnn. or they knew the kid and someone said, you know, i just can t go
reporter: well, anderson, you re right. if you remember last week, texas department of public safety investigators were saying an unidentified teacher had left that back door dropped hope and that s how the gunman got inside the school. well, now, that story has changed. texas department of public safety officials are now saying that that teacher once she realized that there was a gunman on the campus went back to the door and closed it, but it did not lock. anderson? ed, appreciate it. thank you. more now on chief arradondo and why he hasn t responded to texas rangers for two days who are investigating what went on. cnn s shimon prokupecz has more on that. do authorities know why the uvalde school district police chief is not responding? reporter: i think part of it is now he knows there s this scrutiny on, he perhaps has concerns legally for himself, and that s why he s not responding to their questions.
one teacher describes the tense moments in her school room after spotting the gunman outside her class window. i just kept hearing shots fired and i kept praying, god, please don t let him come in my room. please don t let him come in this room. and for some reason, he didn t. reporter: abc news obtained a portion of video that appears to be audio from a 911 operator relaying information from a child inside the classroom. we have a child on the line, he is in the room full of victims. reporter: questions remain focused tonight on the police response. the texas department of public safety director says it was the school district police chief, pete arradondo, who made the decision not to breach the classrooms earlier. arradondo, who hasn t been seen publicly since the shooting, is facing harsh criticism and a department of justice review for what officers didn t do. as kids inside the school repeatedly called 911, pleading for help. you cry and you mourn harder here because the
just don t have answers to yet. because that s what the families of these 19 children and two teachers deserved. that s what survivors deserved. why can t they get these answers from the uvalde police, even one week later? why did it take so long to take down a mass murderer as children were begging for help. why did the police chief ordered his officers to hold off entering these classrooms. why won t that chief, pete arradondo answer the questions himself? he won t answer these questions from reporters. he won t answer them from a texas rangers. have not talked to them in two days. won t respond for a follow-up interview. why not?
