A few months after the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, as it became more clear that companies weren t coming back in full force to its office building at 401 N. Michigan Ave. anytime soon, Walton Street Capital saw there was a moment to be seized.
With a fraction of the normal foot traffic in the 35-story building each day and more construction contractors scrambling for jobs, the Chicago-based firm scrapped its original plan to modernize the lobby with new lighting, a 1,000-square-foot wall garden and a revamped security desk in 2021 and did it all in 2020 instead.
