The cold winter air in the east is filled tonight with the sounds of plows in search of pavement and shovels in search of sidewalks. After the storm, new bedford, massachusetts, is digging out of more than a foot of snow. Roads throughout the northeast and Midatlantic States are still icy and dangerous. This is virginia. And now temperatures many the region are plummeting again. Today it got as low as nine degrees in washington, d. C. , seven in new york city and boston. Freeze. When the wind does drop, our temperatures get a chance to drop more between 10 and 18 miles an hour. You can see it across the area, 9 in Frederick Maryland and the wind speed delivering windchill values that right now most neighborhoods are just above freezing, from feeling like 6 in minneapolis to 7 in manassas. Just below zero in gaithersburg and hagerstown. Even though winds are easing up more tonight, i expect windchill values to be just below zero. Right now, sunshine across the area. The sun sets at 5 18. As soon as it does, were talking about icy conditions with a flash freeze. Black ice, that thin layer that is very transparent and hard to see. And is on bridges and overpas s overpasses. Roads will become very slick. We want to talk about driving slowly. A lot of folks, a little deceived from conditions on area roads. Yesterdays snowfall brought daily records, you know, you felt them. The official total at Reagan National was 3. 8, although other areas in the district saw more. New york city had 10 inches. Parts of new jersey saw 15. 5 inches, and philly got just above 13 inches. Those were snow total records. It does not look like the snow will melt anytime soon in our area, despite todays sunny skies. Storm team4 meteorologist chuck bell is in for tom kierein and begins the winter storm coverage. Warnings about security and fears of a terrorist attack appear to be taking something of a toll tonight, with 16 days to go now until the Opening Ceremony of the Winter Olympics games in sochi, russia, while the modern olympics are a relatively Television Event and few get to attend the games in person, those who will attend, ranging from athletes to families and media and spectators are watching it closely as russia continues to promise a heavily defended fortress around these games. Olympic team confirmed that it had received a threatening email in broken english, warning athletes not to come here. The threat, however, is not considered credible.
