Recruiting athletes during pandemic: GPRC volleyball coach Lauren Hale-Miller

(GPRC) GRANDE PRAIRIE, AB – Grande Prairie Regional College Wolves women’s volleyball coach Lauren Hale-Miller struck the motherlode recruiting four Dawson Creek Volleyball Club members for next year. Without being able to get into the high school gyms to see players live, Hale-Miller had to depend on the relationships she built in her short two years at the helm of the Wolves. “I definitely miss being there in person. I think that’s the fun and exciting part of recruiting when you’re there in person, even though it takes up a ton of time,” says Hale-Miller. “I feel like coaches just know that they’re gonna spend their weekends and evenings in the gym; it just comes with the job.”

Tom Whitton hopes bring social conscience, fiscal responsibility to council

JOHN, B.C – Tom Whitton is officially a candidate for the upcoming municipal by-election with his son’s future being a huge driving force behind his decision to run. “He’s going to be going into kindergarten. I started, kind of, taking a step back and thinking what will be here for him in 12 years,” says Whitton. Whitton, who has called Fort St. John home for nine years, looks to bring a combination of social conscience and fiscal responsibility to the council chambers. As his son gets older, Whitton wants to make sure there are mental health supports for him and residents alike.

PRRD Town Hall discuss next steps for Rose Prairie water station

(Jeff McDonald, PRRD) ROSE PRAIRIE, B.C. – The future of the Rose Prairie Water Station was discussed at a virtual town hall Tuesday, including possible alternate locations for the water fill station. The Peace River Regional District sought public thoughts and opinions in advance of the town hall. At the time of the town hall, seven residents completed surveys. The PRRD reminded residents that the survey portal will be open until April 9th. Options were presented for the future of the water station during a short presentation. Option one includes using the existing station and remove any gas issues before treating the water. Option two involves fully decommissioning the site and looking for alternate water sources.

Province ensuring Job protected leave for workers getting vaccinated

(Northern Health) VICTORIA, B.C. – The provincial government has made changes to the Employment Standards Act, ensuring part and full-time workers can take the needed time to get vaccinated without fear of losing their jobs. “We need to get British Columbians vaccinated if we want to put this pandemic behind us,” said Harry Bains, Minister of Labour. “This safeguard ensures no one will lose their job if they need time away from work to get vaccinated for COVID-19.” The government is also looking at options to provide workers with paid leave to get their COVID-19 vaccine. The province has initiated discussions with members of British Columbia’s business community, labour organizations, and workers hit hard by the impacts of the pandemic.
