When Darrell Allison was introduced to the Fayetteville State University community last February, the room was filled with people wearing masks. The world was still in the worse pandemic of the century. It was a tough start for FSU’s new chancellor-elect, but crisis leadership generally determines how sound executives are. Allison has moved quickly since officially taking the reigns as chancellor on March 15. Last week, he surpassed 60 days on the job. Two months is a short time, but to some, it’s an important marker, measuring Allison’s early achievements. In response to the chancellor’s “First 60 Days,” I reached out to some faculty members, staff, and community stakeholders to gain a perspective on how well they thought he is performing thus far.

Fayetteville State University hires Monica Terrell Leach as provost

Fayetteville State University announced Monday the hiring of a provost, a position considered vitally important by the school’s new chancellor. Monica Terrell Leach will serve as FSU’s provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs starting June 1, according to a statement released by the university. She is currently senior associate vice chancellor for enrollment management and academic affairs at North Carolina Central University. The FSU board of trustees met in closed session for about 14 minutes during a special meeting on Friday to discuss a personnel matter. The board took no action in open session, and a university spokesman said the board is not required to announce what it discussed in closed session.

Fayetteville State University Faculty call to reinstall Chancellor Valentine

F.T. Norton Calling for the revocation of Darrell Allison’s appointment as chancellor of Fayetteville State University, the school s Faculty Senate voted Friday to declare that the search for a chancellor had failed, and demanded that interim Chancellor Peggy Valentine be installed to the position. The Faculty Senate, made up of elected representatives from all branches of the school, met in open session Friday to consider a number of resolutions concerning the growing controversy surrounding Allison’s recent appointment to the position. Among the issues causing concern for the Faculty Senate are allegations that Allison “lacks the requisite academic experience necessary to serve as the leader of an academic institution;” that he was not recommended by the search committee for the position; and that, as a member of the University University of North Carolina Board of Governors from which he resigned to pursue the FSU chancellorship he was involved in the selection
