thank you, everyone, for wat watching. cnn newsroom is now. good morning. i m rerica hill. i m jim sciutto. buffalo bills safety damar hamlin still in critical condition in a cincinnati hospital. the 24-year-old collapsed on the field after a violent collision. players on the field shell shocked as medical staff performed cpr on hamlin for a full nine minutes before they finally restored his heart beat. he was driven out of the stadium in an ambulance. the nfl later suspended that football game. the bills updated that hamlin suffered cardiac arrest after that tackle. we ll be live in cincinnati with the latest on his condition. we ll be talking to a lot of former nfl players about this. important to get their perspective on how all of that happened last night. what it means moving forward. we re monitoring the situation of capitol hill today. a new congress set to begin with republicans in control, but without a speaker. that vote is set for later today. at th
being, two distinct possibilities. one is what we re hearing about, that is the impact to hamlin s chest hit right at the time that the heart rhythm caused a chaotic spiral. if you see on your screen, right at the time of the heart beat, that red line shows you the most inopportune time to get a blow to the chest that can cause a chaos. there s another distinct possibility. that possibility after i went frame by frame yesterday, there is the possibility that the blow went to his jaw and into his brain. in other words, a traumatic brain injury of sorts. here s the connection. in very small cases, very rare cases of severe enough traumatic brain injury, you can have
baby. this tornado that hit mississippi traveled some 150 miles and was reportedly about a mile wide. rob marciano has been keeping an eye on things. where is that weather? it s out of that area in particular, but other people might be under threat from the same system. the energy moved off to the east and that storm cell that produced the tornado is certainly incredible and the width of the path and the length of the path just amazing stuff. 97 miles long. maybe longer than that once they get the surveying done. in some spots a mild to a mile and three-quarters wide. ef-4 with winds of 170 miles per hour or better. it happened during the day but it was wrapped in rain so it was hard to see. no mistaking the aftermath of that. this is all headed to the east. the tail end of this, the back half, the trailing front is now moving through south florida. this has been producing some severe thunderstorms, heavier rain. certainly lightning and gusty

we found matthew mccray and his wife, jo, on a back road, their house blown 40 feet off the foundation. his guitars muddies. it is days like this that inspired the mississippi blues. what was it like being in there when this happened? just that quick it sent woof and woof again and the roof was off. reporter: was it scary? i just started praying and asking the lord to save me. reporter: along this dirt road, the tornado killed it s three youngest victims, two sisters and a three-month-old baby girl. a 13-year-old and a 9-year-old were killed here. they were here with their parents. the force of the storm so powerful it disengreated their
