Plastic bags are not a big problem here DURING a community clean-up of Chessel Bay, Bitterne Manor, the other week I only saw about a dozen plastic shopping bags there. Most had almost degraded. Apart from several long lengths of industrial plastic wrap (possibly the same material as the bags but much thicker), most of the litter along the shore was sweet/chocolate wrappers and crisp bags, plus plenty of drink cans! For the rest, expanded polystyrene (floats for marina jetties and fast food packaging) made up the most mess and was the most difficult to pick up. Albania, where I travelled recently, does have a major problem with the bags and the south of the country, which is dry and barren, was covered in them.
