Law enforcement officials shut down Highway 101 in both directions in Agoura Hills for hours Thursday night as they handled an incendiary device that was ultimately detonated on an overpass.
The shutdown came after an off-duty deputy driving on the freeway saw a small explosion by the overpass near Cheseboro Road, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff s Lost Hills station. The deputy pulled off to investigate and found a suspicious device on the bridge, which connects Palo Comado Canyon Road to Cheseboro. The area is east of the Ventura County line.
The California Highway Patrol s West Valley station said it had received reports around 7:30 p.m. of possible fireworks being used on the overpass. Sheriff s officials investigating the case later said they had not yet determined what the device was.

Lake Hughes Man Killed After Being Ejected From Vehicle In Fatal Palmdale Crash
A man from Lake Hughes was killed on Thursday after reportedly making an “unsafe turning movement,” and being ejected from his vehicle in a fatal Palmdale crash.
At around 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, the body of 28-year-old Anthony Desantis of Lake Hughes was reportedly found on the northbound side of 35101 Cheseboro Road north of Barrel Springs Road in Palmdale, according to an official with Los Angeles County Medical Examiner-Coroner.
Officials believe that Desantis had been driving a 2006 Mazda 3 at the time.
“For undetermined reasons, (Desantis) made an unsafe turning movement, allowing the vehicle to veer to the left across the southbound lane and onto the west dirt shoulder,” wrote Officers Monique Mischeaux, spokesperson for the California Highway Patrol (CHP) Antelope Valley Office, in an email to KHTS Friday. “The vehicle went airborne and overturned.”
