As Walmart reopens its Sam’s Circle location in Chesapeake this week, nearly five months after six people were killed in a horrific shooting at the store, one former employee is continuing her legal battle against the corporate giant and others are likely to follow.
By John HopkinsThe Virginian-Pilot CHESAPEAKE - Talion Hawkins pleaded with police in March 2006, after he confessed to detectives that he had killed his grandparents in their home in the Indian River section of the city. "All I ask is that you all please help me stay alive," he told detectives. "Jail time. I will stay in jail the rest of my life, but I'd rather live. You understand?" Prosecutors said Monday they will seek the death penalty against Hawkins. The 19-year-old is scheduled to stand trial in Chesapeake Circuit Court . . .
Newly-elected Chesapeake City Council member Amanda Newins was indicted by a grand jury Tuesday on a single charge of financially exploiting a vulnerable adult for allegedly obtaining ownership of her great aunt’s home through illegal means.
The store has been shut down since Nov. 22, the day of the incident. Since then, Walmart has responded to three lawsuits filed by employees of the Chesapeake store.
