CARIMAC Journalism Final Year event: DIGITIMES 2021

Cheryl W Thompson and Damion Mitchell Emmy Award-winning investigative journalist Cheryl W Thompson of the National Public Radio (NPR) will deliver the CARIMAC DigiTimes 2021 lecture under the theme “Investigative Journalism holding the powerful accountable in a pandemic.” The virtual event is scheduled for April 15 at 6pm and will be streamed live on the CARIMAC UWI MONA YouTube channel. Staged as part of an annual final-year Journalism student showcase at CARIMAC, the event is also a project of the Integrated Marketing Communication graduating class of 2021. Integrated Editor Damion Mitchell of the Gleaner Company will be hosting the virtual event. Both a local and international audience will be facilitated on the platform to share in the lecture.

IRE names veteran journalist as next executive director The IRE Board is thrilled to announce that Diana R. Fuentes will serve as the next executive director of the 6,000-member organization. She is the first person of color to serve in that role. Fuentes, a Texas native, has served as the Deputy Metro Editor of the San Antonio Express-News since 2015. She has extensive senior management and masthead-level experience running newsrooms throughout Texas, and has served on numerous boards, including the American Society of Newspaper Editors (now the News Leaders Association). She is past president, treasurer and secretary of the Texas APME and the Freedom of Information Foundation of Texas. She is a lifetime member, and former secretary and financial officer of the National Association of Hispanic Journalists.

Racial Health Disparities and Accountability Journalism

Camara Phyllis Jones, epidemiologist and senior fellow at the Satcher Health Leadership Institute and Cardiovascular Research Institute at the Morehouse School of Medicine, discusses how health disparities disproportionately affect people of color, particularly in relation to COVID-19, and her work on racism as a public health issue. Cheryl W. Thompson, investigative correspondent for NPR, shares best practices for reporting that educate for the public interest. Carla Anne Robbins, adjunct senior fellow at CFR and former deputy editorial page editor at the New York Times, hosts the webinar.

NPR Launches Station Investigations Team As Part Of Collaborative Journalism Network

Washington D.C., Feb 3., 2021 NPR announced today the creation of the Station Investigations Team. The team, led by Cheryl W. Thompson, an award-winning investigative reporter and 22-year veteran of The Washington Post who joined NPR in 2019, will work with stations to report ambitious investigative projects. The team, funded by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, will include a producer and a data editor who will advise reporters who d like technical help with skills such as data collection and analysis and freedom of information requests. The team will also help facilitate stations opportunities to localize NPR investigations through webinars and open-source data.
