Duncan says she has clients who are employed, but homeless. Marcroft and Duncan believed many fell into the trap of thinking only people on low or no incomes struggled with money. However, 40 per cent of their clients had jobs. When people found themselves in financial trouble, they were turning to banks, loan sharks and pawn shops, often making their situation worse. “Come to us when you re changing jobs, having a baby, going on unpaid leave. We can help you out,” Marcroft said. “But, most of the time, people are near crisis for a long time.” Duncan said one client’s health and well-being was so affected it almost cost her life. She was now proud to report that client had stayed on top of her mortgage for more than a month.
