After 19 months of construction and preparation, MemorialCare Miller Children’s & Women’s Hospital Long Beach officially opened its brand-new 80,000 sq. ft. outpatient specialty building on the hospital campus called the Cherese Mari Laulhere Children’s Village.
Hospital leaders John Bishop, CEO and Graham Tse, M.D., are joined by major gift donor, Chris Laulhere, to cut the ceremonial ribbon signifying the opening of the Cherese Mari Laulhere Children’s Village.
Many children have more than one health issue, which previously required families to travel to various specialty medical offices scattered around Long Beach. Now, more than 30 different types of specialty physicians and a variety of medical services, such as a pharmacy, laboratory and imaging services, are all centralized in the Children’s Village.
Patients and their family members who will utilize the new Cherese Mari Laulhere Children’s Village were joined Friday by numerous elected officials and hospital staff to celebrate the ribbon cutting at the new facility on the Long Beach Medical Center campus.

Patient Derrick Cervantes, 9, addressed the small crowd and digital viewers virtually during the event, along with his mom Ashley.
“Thank you everyone who has been there for me,” Derrick said. “I’m excited to be a part of this new Children’s Village.”
Derrick was born with gastroschisis, which later led to the development of short bowel syndrome. Due to his condition, Derrick has required treatment from multiple specialists, including infectious disease, pediatric surgery, endocrinology, gastrointestinal, hematology and most recently weekly iron infusions.
A year and a half after the first shovel hit the ground, Turner Construction handed the keys to the Cherese Mari Laulhere Children’s Village to MemorialCare Miller Children’s & Women’s Hospital Long Beach signifying the end of construction. When it opens in late February, this brand-new four story, 80,000 sq. ft. building located on the Miller Children’s & Women’s campus will house a variety of medical services and relocate several medical offices that currently are spread across Long Beach.
A special ceremony was held on Tuesday, Dec. 15 to mark the occasion with leaders from Miller Children’s & Women’s, Turner Construction and the project’s architect firm, c|a ARCHITECTS.
