Around 1,500 eateries in Chennai and suburbs shut down since COVID-19 outbreak

Before coronavirus, Chennai had 10,000 licensed restaurants.   (Representational Image)  |  Photo Credit: iStock Images Chennai: The coronavirus pandemic left the restaurants bleeding in Tamil Nadu s Chennai as around 1,500 restaurants, eateries have closed their shutter since the COVID-19 outbreak that hit almost a year ago. The effect of the COVID-19 was such that almost 15% of businesses were closed thereby leaving 1.5 lakh people unemployed. Before coronavirus, Chennai had 10,000 licensed restaurants.   According to the report in the Times of India, as per the Chennai Hotels Association, 6 lakh people were employed in the hospitality sector before the coronavirus induced lockdown. Also, 75% workforce comprised of migrant workers.
