Onion Exports Face Woes In Wooing Back Importers, Higher Domestic Price

According to the Kolkata-based Directorate-General of Commercial Intelligence and Statistics, India exported 13.17 lakh tonnes of onion between April and October this fiscal before the ban was imposed.
Onion shipments from India are facing problems after the Union government lifted the ban on exports from 1 January this year, first in wooing back importers and now due to rising domestic prices.
The Union government banned onion exports in September last year after the vegetableâs retail prices began to surge. In the second week of October, the rates topped Rs 100 a kg in retail outlets.

At least 11 States have been affected by the bird flu outbreak in India leading to culling of thousands of poultry birds. The outbreak has affected consumption of poultry products such as egg and meat to some extent.

A nearly eight percent rise in maize prices in the global market since the beginning of 2021 has helped domestic prices stabilise despite the poultry industry, the primary consuming sector, being hit by avian influenza outbreak across India.
According to Trading Economics website, maize (corn) prices have increased to 520.25 US cents a bushel year-to-date. The commodity’s rise month-on-month is 18.30 percent.
