Brussels warns UK ahead of Brexit deal vote
The European Parliament on Tuesday evening voted on the Brexit deal, with Luxembourg’s six MEPs Charles Goerens, Monica Semedo, Christophe Hansen, Isabel Wiseler-Lima, Tilly Metz and Marc Angel saying ahead of time they would support it. The agreement was reached at the last minute on Christmas Eve last year ahead of a 31 December deadline of the UK leaving the EU. Ursula von der Leyen ahead of the vote told MEPs that the deal includes “real teeth” to punish the UK should it fail to adhere to the terms agreed. “We do not want to have to use these tools, but we will not hesitate to use them if necessary,” she said. The result of the vote is expected on Wednesday. Sources: The Guardian, RTL, BBC, Reuters, FT.

DAKAR (Reuters) - Ireland’s government confirmed on Wednesday that an Irish citizen, wildlife NGO founder Rory Young, was killed by unidentified gunmen along with two Spanish journalists in an ambush in Burkina Faso this week.
The three foreigners and a member of the Burkinabe armed forces went missing on Monday after an attack on a convoy of security forces, forest rangers and expatriates, according to Burkina Faso’s government.
“Mr. Young was part of a group that on Monday morning was attacked by unknown assailants in the eastern part of Burkina Faso,” the Irish foreign ministry said in a statement.

Two Spanish journalists and an Irish citizen have been killed after they were kidnapped during an anti-poaching patrol in Burkina Faso on Monday.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez confirmed the deaths of the Spanish nationals Tuesday in a post on Twitter. “The worst news has been confirmed. All of our affection for the families,” he wrote.
Sánchez identified them as David Beriain and Roberto Fraile.
The pair were part of a group of 40 people patrolling a national park near the border of Burkina Faso and Benin in West Africa, Spain’s Foreign Minister Arancha González Laya told a press conference in Madrid Tuesday shortly before their deaths were officially confirmed.
