The Taiwan Statebuilding Party is to hold a memorial concert to mark the legacies of former president Lee Teng-hui (李登輝) and former Japanese prime minister Shinzo Abe at the Kaohsiung City Music Hall on Friday at 7pm.
“Taiwanese and Japanese will always remember these two great statesmen who have left us. For all of us, it is like losing an elder family member,” party Chairman Chen Yi-chi (陳奕齊) said yesterday as he announced the event.
The concert is to feature soprano Wu Chia-fen (吳佳芬) of the Vlaamse Opera in Belgium and a piano recital by Hsu Wei-en (徐惟恩), an assistant professor at
Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) legislator-elect Lin Ching-yi (林靜儀) yesterday thanked voters in Taichung’s second electoral district after defeating the Chinese Nationalist Party’s (KMT) candidate, Yen Kuan-heng (顏寬恒), in a by-election on Sunday.
Lin was joined in the afternoon by former Taiwan Statebuilding Party legislator Chen Po-wei (陳柏惟) as they visited temples and markets in Shalu (沙鹿) and Longjing (龍井) districts.
The by-election was held to fill the legislative seat vacated by Chen after he was in October last year ousted in a recall vote initiated by the KMT and the Yen family.

Voters in Taichung yesterday recalled Taiwan Statebuilding Party Legislator Chen Po-wei (陳柏惟), making him the first legislator in the nation’s history to lose a recall election.
A total of 77,899 votes were cast to recall Chen, while 73,433 voted against, the Taichung City Election Commission said, adding that 51.72 percent of the city’s second electoral district turned out.
The Central Election Commission is to confirm the final figures within the next seven days, it said.
Commission data showed that there are 294,976 eligible voters in the second district, comprised of Dadu (大肚), Shalu (沙鹿), Longjing (龍井), Wufong (霧峰) and Wurih (烏日) districts.
