The huge amount of money spent to establish the Taipei City Government’s “big data” center has raised concerns, especially after Taipei Mayor Ko Wen-je (柯文哲) let slip that he had considered allowing commercial use of the information.
Responding to suspicions voiced by Taipei City Councilor Hsu Shu-hua (許淑華) of the Democratic Progressive Party that the city government planned to sell the data it collects through its Taipei Pass app, Ko said: “We’re not planning to use this data for any nefarious purposes.”

THE Taipei Economic and Cultural Office (Teco) in Malaysia and the Han Culture Centre Malaysia (Han) are jointly organising the “Malaysian and Taiwanese Folklores and Legends of Aboriginal Peoples Illustration Books Project” in conjunction with the 2020 Kuala Lumpur World Book Capital (KLWBC) and National Reading Decade.
This is a continuation of the successful “Ba-Ku Bersama” (reading books together) Mobile Library Project last year.
The “Malaysian Folklores Writing Competition” was also launched as part of the project officiated by KLWBC 2020 secretariat head Anwar Mohd Zain, and witnessed by TECO cultural division director Chen Kuan-fu recently.
Cross-strait chasm seen in tycoon, media group

Two seismic events, one in Taiwan and the other in Hong Kong, have sent shock waves through the respective journalistic communities over the past month.
The event in Taiwan occurred at midnight on Dec. 11, when CTi News ceased broadcasting on cable television after its license renewal application was rejected by the National Communications Commission.
The following day, the channel’s owner, Want Want China Times Media Group founder Tsai Eng-meng (蔡衍明), announced that CTi News would be transformed into a “new media” organization and continue broadcasting around-the-clock on YouTube.
At the time of writing, the YouTube channel had 2.27 million subscribers.
