In what head coach Jessica Lynn considered their most complete outing of the season, the Brownwood Lady Lions wrapped up the first half of District 6-4A softball action with a crucial 6-1 home victory over the Stephenville Honeybees Tuesday night.
The win – the second in a row for the Lady Lions (6-11-1, 2-2) following a stretch of nine losses in 10 games – pulls Brownwood into a second-place tie with Stephenville (9-12, 2-2) and Lampasas (11-10, 2-2) midway through the league slate.
“I hate to say this was a must-win with half of district to play, but it was because we didn’t want to fall too far behind Stephenville and Lampasas in the standings,” said Lynn, whose team inched significantly closer to a 17
Auzzlyn Benedict hit a home run for Brownwood in the loss to Graham Saturday. [File photo by Derrick Stuckly]GRAHAM – The Brownwood Lady Lions concluded play at the Graham softball tournament Saturday with losses to the host Lady Blues, 13-12, as well as a 10-7 defeat at the hands of Holliday.
Against Graham (12-6), the Lady Lions trailed 1-0 after one inning, but grabbed a 7-1 lead in the top of the seven. The Lady Blues reclaimed an 8-7 advantage in the bottom of the second, but Brownwood responded to open a 12-8 advantage in the top of third. In the bottom of the third, however, Graham tacked on five more runs to earn the walk-off, time-limit win.
SAN ANGELO – The Brownwood Lady Lions softball team added two more wins to their season tally to conclude Concho Classic action Saturday, knocking off Amarillo Palo Duro, 6-0, and Big Spring, 6-3.
In the win over Palo Duro, Auzzlyn Benedict hurled a four-inning, one-hit shutout with nine strikeouts and three walks.
Brownwood scored in all four trips to the plate – two runs in both the first and second innings and one each in the third and fourth.
The Lady Lions chalked up four hits – one each by Benedict, Chesney Covey, Mia Lopez, and Cecilia Rodriguez, who drove in two – with six walks, and Palo Duro committed six errors.
