Saturday, June 5 signaled the start of the 2021 Breakfast With The Babies two-year-old qualifying sessions, sponsored by Fashion Farms, on a perfect morning at The Meadowlands with the temperature in the low 70’s °F / low 20 s °C and virtually no wind. The races began at 9:00 a.m.
The first crop of Walner has been well received as winter training reports have been optimistic and today’s performances did nothing to dissuade that opinion. His sons and daughters won five of the seven trotting races on the day. The results suggest a quote by the late, great Ron Gurfein who observed early in the first crop of another great trotting sire of a few generations ago, “You’re going to have to have a Valley Victory to beat a Valley Victory.”
Anoka Hanover might not have been the hardest working horse in harness racing last season, but as far as Dan Patch Award-winning two-year-old trotters over a span of almost 25 years, she was nearly at the top.
The Noel Daley-trained Anoka Hanover won 10 of 14 starts in 2020 and captured the Dan Patch Award for best two-year-old trotting filly. Going back to 1997 only one two-year-old Dan Patch Award winning trotter female or male exceeded 13 races: the filly Check Me Out, who won 14 of 16 in 2011. The most recent two-year-old trotting male to surpass 13 starts was Malabar Man, who won 13 of 15 races in 1996.
“14 starts are a lot to give a two-year-old, but she was as good or better at the end than she was early,” Daley said. “She was never the prettiest-gaited horse. But she had a good attitude, a good head on her. I was very happy with the way her year progressed.”
