Students at Chautauqua Lake celebrated their 100th day. This year was extra special because they have been able to meet in person throughout the year.
MAYVILLE There are 18 public school districts in Chautauqua County. Only one of them has been lucky enough to have met every day in person this school year with all of its students.
That school is Chautauqua Lake.
Last spring, Gov. Andrew Cuomo ordered all schools to go to remote learning due to COVID-19. Schools continued to stay that way throughout the end of the school year. They were told if they wanted to open in the fall, they needed to create a plan and meet certain criteria.

Even when students do attend in person, the Ripley school has an empty feeling.
Here is the real problem with the public sector’s perception of the $16 billion deficit that is currently facing New York state. It can be summed up in three words: Ripley Central Schools.
Smallest of the 18 Chautauqua County districts, serving less than 160 students from prekindergarten to grade six, officials and elected board members are in the midst of moving forward with plans for a nearly $3 million capital project. “No final decisions have been made and we’re still putting all the pieces in place,” said Superintendent William Caldwell recently. “If we go forward, the Board of Education isn’t scheduled to approve the project until June and the public vote wouldn’t take place until September.”

Justin Latimer as been a member of Special Olympics New York for several years, participating in golf, bocce, bowling and most recently floor hockey. He was presented on Friday with the Athlete Spirit Award for his involvement in the organization.
Every day Justin Latimer and his mom take turns singing lines from “Three Little Birds” by Bob Marley and the Wailers. The lyrics are simple and joyful, with its iconic message clear: “Every little thing is gonna be alright.”
It was that song that blasted from the radio following his graduation ceremony at Chautauqua Lake Central School in 2019. “I sing mine and then you finish it,” Justin said of the lines during a recent interview with his mom, Brenda Latimer, a teacher at Jamestown Public Schools.
