COVID 19 restrictions imposed by the State government has hit business hard and a large number of workers employed in large scale commercial establishments have become jobless in Tiruchi.
Most of the shopping malls, textile showrooms and jewellery marts downed their shutters since Wednesday here in compliance with the directive of the State government. The owners and managements of the establishments were told that the establishments with space exceeding 3000 square feet would have to down shutters until further notice from the government. The managements were told that it was aimed at preventing crowds so as to check the spread of the COVID 19 infections.

Normal life came to a virtual standstill on Sunday as people stayed indoors and vehicles kept off the roads during the course of the lockdown imposed by the State government to check the spread of COVID-19 virus.
While roads were deserted, essential services such as hospitals, laboratories, ambulance services and pharmacies were in place, as they were exempted from the purview of the total lockdown. The visibility of police and health professionals was high.
The Central Bus Stand, which usually bustles with the arrivals and departures of buses carrying hundreds of passengers, looked deserted. Not even a single vehicle could be spotted in the bus stand. Passengers made alternative arrangements to reach their destinations well in advance as the announcement was made in time by the Government. Similar was the scenario at the Chathiram Bus Stand, where buses to different parts of the city and neighbouring villages are operated

At a time when residents are up in arms against the poor solid waste management in the city, the Tiruchi Corporation seems to have scaled down night sweeping in many areas.
The civic body with an aim of supplementing the efficiency of solid waste management had introduced night sweeping in 2018. A group of sanitary workers, mostly men, were hand picked for all the four zones in the city to clean the main roads, Central Bus Stand, Chathiram Bus Stand, markets and other thickly populated market areas. Besides collecting garbage, they were tasked to remove the sand and mud accumulated along the important roads. Supervisors were also engaged to man the operation.

In what should have been a small patch of green between the busy Chathiram Bus Stand and a residential area along Old Karur Road in Mela Chintamani stands a huge mound of garbage.
Compounding the travails of the residents, open defecation is commonplace here. While traffic roars past the bustling Mela Chinthamani, this patch lies on a clearing behind Muneeswarankoil. The garbage mound is mostly domestic waste from nearby apartments, food waste dumped by street vendors, banana leaves used to serve food at these stalls and plastic bottles. Even a decomposing carcass of a dog is lying here for weeks.
