(February 25, 2021 / JNS) Jewish groups are cheering a report that NBC is pulling an episode of the TV show “Nurses” from its digital platforms after it depicted a highly inflammatory scene featuring Chassidic Jewish characters.

But it is Davis and Lynn Cohen, who plays the wife of the deceased (and whom you may recognize as Golda Meir in the film
Munich) that make this movie. Davis looks like a wounded animal who is tormented and has survivor’s guilt both from an incident involving a younger relative in New York City, as well as an image we see of presumably the Holocaust era (no spoilers here). The harrowing flashbacks are enough to give you a knot in your stomach.

Tibor Szamuely was born to Jewish parents in 1890 in the town of Nyíregyháza in Eastern Hungary. His name has virtually became synonymous with the red terror of the 1919 Soviet Republic of Hungary: as deputy commissar for military affairs, later commissar for education and head of the terror squad of the short-lived communist regime, he was responsible for the deaths of many.
As a poet, creative writing instructor, and Chassidic Jew, I am fascinated by the surprising ways contemporary poetry and Judaism overlap. It was, therefore, a great honor and challenge to write the following essay, which serves as the “Foreword” to 101 Jewish Poems for the Third Millennium (Ashland Poetry Press, 2021), an anthology of poems on the Jewish experience by a diverse group of today’s established and emerging poets.

Zalman Zirkind, a Chassidic Jew, is scheduled to be sentenced in U.S. District Court, in New York, for having pleaded guilty to laundering drug money. He faces a possible 11 to 14 years in jail.
As reported by The New York Jewish Week (January 15, 2021) his supporters “have submitted letters testifying to his character and asking for a lenient sentence”.
