FALL RIVER Could Fall River be one of the hottest neighborhoods in the country?
It is indeed, at least according to Redfin, an online real estate brokerage firm. Redfin released its list of the top 10 neighborhoods for 2021, and the criteria included: the neighborhood is located outside but within driving distance of a coastal hub like New York City, Boston, Philadelphia, San Francisco or Los Angeles; most have seen double-digit growth in home sales and housing values over the past year; and most have a median home price below the national level of $336,000.
A lot of the appeal of these locations grew thanks to the pandemic: Vacation towns and suburbs outside of major coastal cities are on the rise as remote work drives Americans to seek out space, solitude and affordability during the coronavirus pandemic, according to Redfin.
FALL RIVER The last football game Jess Read went to was a matchup between two high school teams.
The next football game she’ll be attending will be Sunday night’s Super Bowl LV in Tampa.
“I’ve never been to a professional football game,” Read, 23, said.
The Charlton Memorial Hospital registered nurse was one of two RNs randomly selected from a pool of nurses and health care workers who work for the Southcoast Health hospital network, which also includes St. Luke’s Hospital in New Bedford and Tobey Hospital in Wareham.
Read and her Charlton RN colleague Kyla Sears are among 76 vaccinated healthcare workers from the six New England states who will be flying to Tampa Sunday morning from Logan International Airport in Boston, courtesy of New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft.
Jessica Read from Fairhaven and Kyla Sears from Swansea, COVID nurses from Charlton Memorial, will both fly down to the Super Bowl on the Patriots' private jet.
In just one week, New Bedford s COVID recovery center has 32 patients
NEW BEDFORD After its opening week, the city s COVID-19 recovery and care center on Acushnet Avenue has seen an influx of patients.
As of Jan. 28, there are 32 patients admitted at the center, according to city media spokesperson Jon Carvalho. The surge center opened on Jan. 18 to house patients battling the virus with extensive recovery times that require ongoing care. This eases the burden from hospitals by opening up beds and allowing more patients to be admitted.
In the press release, Mayor Jon Mitchell said he decided to reopen the facility to assist the region s health care system and the recent surge of COVID-19 patients. It s the only one of its kind in the state. The state has established field hospitals elsewhere, like in Lowell and Worcester, but without one in the SouthCoast, the city of New Bedford stepped up to open this facility.
