Nearly one in 10 North Carolinians are now born outside of the United States. In Mecklenburg County, the foreign-born population reaches 16%. State administrators are working to better understand this population through a cross-agency group focused on immigrants and refugees.
As North Carolina’s Latino population grows, so does the community’s influence on the state. That was the topic of discussion during EQUALibrium Live: “The Growing Influence of Latinos on the Charlotte Area.”
The 77,000 Charlotte residents whose primary language is not English have struggled to get basic information about staying safe during the COVID-19 pandemic. North Carolina's largest city is now trying to improve communication with those residents.
