With a flip of dirt from their shovels, officials from local government, Atrium Health and Wake Forest University on Tuesday officially started construction on the city of Charlotte’s first medical school.
Charlotte City Council approved a plan to let the city reimburse part of $75 million to a management company that will build what Atrium Health is calling an "innovation district" to go along with its new medical school. But Mecklenburg County is also being asked to chip in on that $75 million, and commissioners can't vote on their part until December.
There's too much demand and not enough supply in the Charlotte housing market. The median home sales price in the city in September was $335,000 almost 20% more than at the beginning of 2021. Meanwhile, Charlotte could get a medical training center on top of a medical school.
