Six of the original members of the Pueblo School District 60 Citizens’ Bond Advisory Committee (CBAC), which was formed to monitor and report on D60’s bond projects as approved by Pueblo voters in 2019, resigned earlier this month on July 6.
In a resignation letter sent to D60 Board of Education President Taylor Voss and D60 Superintendent Charlotte Macaluso, committee members Ken Lane, Matthew Trujillo, Brittany Campbell, Mike Donnell, Todd Mihelich and Aaron Suazo cited as reason for their resignations opposing viewpoints on the committee’s purpose.
“As original members of the Pueblo School District 60 Citizens’ Bond Advisory Committee we believe that through our committee and our public efforts, we have added value to the bond expenditure process and provided accountability on behalf of the public, as we believe the creation of the advisory committee was intended to do,” the letter reads.
Pueblo District 60 school board votes for emergency closure of Carlile Elementary School
PUEBLO, Colo. (KRDO) The Pueblo District 60 school board unanimously voted yes on the emergency closure of Carlile Elementary School.
The board said millions of dollars worth of repairs needed to make the school safe led to the decision to close the school.
During a 2 p.m. meeting on Thursday, the school board was presented with a report on roofing damage caused by recent rainstorms. Robert Lawson, Executive Director of Facilities and Construction Management, said many areas of the tiled roof had become dislodged, wood boards had been damaged by water, and mold was growing in some areas.
The Pueblo School District 60 Board of Education voted on Thursday to approve an emergency closure of Carlile Elementary School for the upcoming school year and to incorporate the Carlile student body and staff into Columbian Elementary School, after contractors found damage to the school’s HVAC system and roof that make it unfit for occupancy.
“We as a board recognize the difficulty of this kind of emergency closure,” board member Barbara Clementi said after the vote. “It is not taken lightly. We have a beautiful building there on Pitkin and we need to ensure the safety of our students and staff, which we can’t do.”
A rendering of plans for Pueblo D60 s new Centennial High School.
Pueblo School District 60 held groundbreakings for two new high schools this week. It’s part of a project to upgrade nearly half of the district’s schools.
Some $700 million in repairs and improvements are needed at 14 D60 schools. The district determined it was more cost-effective to replace the two high schools, two elementary schools and a K-8 school and make renovations at the other buildings.
D60 superintendent Charlotte Macaluso said this project contributes to the viability of public education in Pueblo.
“It s an opportunity that really changes the life trajectory of our students for generations to come,” she said. “That s how important it is to have state-of-the-art educational facilities for our students.”
