H.S. Roundup: Athol softball rides big 1st inning to get past Pioneer

After back-to-back losses to perennial powerhouses Greenfield and Turners Falls to open the season, the Athol High School softball team broke out in a big way on Tuesday.
The Red Raiders scored nine runs in the bottom of the first inning to set the tone, and ultimately scored an 11-1 win over Pioneer in a Franklin County League contest in Athol.
“The girls were hungry and ready to hit today,” Athol coach Sharon Chauvette said.
Pioneer jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning when Hailey Haughey drilled a solo home run just two batters into the contest.

The Turners Falls and Frontier softball teams have had plenty of time to stew over their championship game losses two years ago.
The Thunder blitzed through the Western Mass. Div. 3 tournament, crushed Hopedale in the state semis but fell to Austin Prep in the championship game. The seventh-seeded Redhawks made a run of their own in the Western Mass Div. 2 tourney, reaching the championship game before losing to Hampshire at UMass.

Elly Patnode put down seven kills, dished out two assists and made two digs to lead the Mohawk Trail girls volleyball team to a 25-18, 25-18, 25-19 sweep of Mahar on Wednesday in Orange.
Palmer King had it going in the service station for the Warriors, scoring 13 aces to go along with three aces and a kill. Octavia Crawford added five assists, three aces and a kill in the winning effort.
