what are we doing fighting over there, when the pakistanis are helping the taliban? i mean, i think it s going to seriously erode confidence in the war. you know that s a very, kind of, nuts and bolts way of looking at it. but that s the way, what you re describing, is what people are seeing. i heard you discuss in the first hour the ram fictions on this, ramifications on that. for the people it s going to be what in god s name are we doing over there? and that s an important fact. now, how that translates in the election is very difficult. because the republicans in congress have been the biggest supporters of the war. they backed the president. so it s hard for them to make an issue answer this, look, we were back here, and i go back, i don t know if you do, back to 65, 66,ance 67. vietnam. this drew an anti-war candidate eugene mccarthy first into the new hampshire primary, and after he did fairly well with 42%, it drew robert kennedy in against their own president, to
again. we haven t touched on the charlie wrangle issue. where does that stand? is there a quiet movement to sort of get him to willingly step down or get out of the way? of course there s apparently more allegations, according to the new york post against him. just more to come, more to come on rangel. as you know, charlie rangel stepped assize as the chairman much the weighs and means committee some time ago. is that enough? now the charges will be made formal as i understand it on thursday and charlie rangel will have to decide how to proceed. he ll have to decide whether he settles the case or whether he continues to take this to the equivalent of a jury, and a courtroom type proceeding within the ethics committee. and that will be his decision going forward. mike barnicle? congressman, that would seem to be a nightmare scenario for the democratic party. at the same time a bill perhaps arises or a suggestion from the president of the united states arises on the floor t
if the president is still hanging in to afghanistan in 2011, 2012, do you see an anti-war candidate coming out of the democratic party? it s possible, pat. it really depends on how far it deteriorates. but on the other hand, if troop withdrawal begins in 2011, if there s some signs that we re trying to get out of there, and i heard, i think you were talking about, if there are only 3,000 american troops, we still have a presence. but if we start to begin to reduce our presence, i think that s probably enough to keep an anti-war candidate out of the race. remember, in vietnam, johnson kept building and building and building. and there was no end in sight. if the american people and the left of our party sees the beginning of a withdrawal the best thing, the president s base on this issue is the right. it is conservatives. it is republicans who believe, i do, too, that the president has done a courageous thing trying to win this war. but is it going to be a 2010 issue? i think
disclosed, so that the american people can make up their own minds. but, of course, this is washington in 2010. and the republican leadership in the senate is once again using every tactic and every maneuver they can to prevent the disclose act from even coming up for an up or down vote. on issue after issue we are trying to move america forward, and they keep on trying to take us back. welcome back to morning joe. now to the morning joe midterm exam. a series we re doing this week on the political races that will matter the most this november. we sat down with our panel of experts, pat buchanan, eugene robinson and chuck todd to break it all down. pat buchanan, is there going to be an october surprise? well, you know, i ve been worried about the iranian, quite frankly, the iranian war scenario. you re getting a real push, joe, in certain parts of the media from, you know, the sanctions didn t work. you re going to get a new national intelligence estimate, saying iran may be
uh-huh. in fact a year to this day. right before you, you ve probably seen it in the makeup room. no. congratulations. oh. that s so sweet. all right. let s take a look at the morning papers. congratulations to that cute little thing. all right, the washington post, among house democrats, a sense of abandonment. at least a dozen congressmen who supported a bill to cap carbon emissions said party leaders left them exposed on the controversial issue. new york times, the national football league is producing a poster that bluntly alerts its players to the long-term effects of concussions using words like depression, and early onset of dementia. but those close to the issue describe this as both staggering and overdue. the boston globe, end of an era. the nation s oldest-running family farm is put on the market in new hampshire. the landmark farm has been passed from father to son since
