With an enhanced trade deal between the UK and Canada potentially on the horizon, we look at what is currently happening in Canada’s pork markets and exports.
Exports
Canada is a major net exporter of pork products globally. During Q1 2021, Canada exported 358,000 tonnes of pig meat (inc offal) globally, an increase of 2% on Q1 2020, according to Statistics Canada. This increase has been driven by rising demand from the US and the Philippines during the last year.
During Q1 2021, Canada exported
303,000 tonnes of fresh and frozen pork globally, an increase of 4% on Q1 2020.
Will high UK prices encourage New Zealand lamb imports?
Thursday, 27 May 2021
Prices
Lamb prices in New Zealand have been rising in recent weeks but still remain well below the high GB farmgate prices observed during the last few months. The gap between farmgate prices in New Zealand and the UK is currently in excess of £2/kg deadweight.
Seasonal trends from previous years indicate that this price gap will tighten, as increased volumes of new season lamb becomes available in the UK in the coming months, putting pressure on the UK’s domestic farmgate price.
The current high gap between UK and New Zealand prices would of course make the UK market more attractive to New Zealand lamb imports, if volumes are available.
Global dairy prices drop back in 2020

The latest Dairy Market Review, released by the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), gives an overview of global dairy market developments in 2020.
Global Price Index
The global Dairy Price index dropped back slightly during 2020, to average slightly below 2019 levels. The
dairy price index averaged 101.8 points in 2020, a drop of 1.0 points year on year. The report suggests the drop in global prices was due to decreased demand for imports caused by economic uncertainty. Other factors holding down global prices included increased availability of dairy products and, in some cases, reduced internal sales.

Sheepmeat production in the EU for 2020 saw an overall decrease of 4% (-16,000t) on 2019 levels, according to the Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board (AHDB).
AHDB’s Charlie Reeve said that this decrease in production across the EU was bigger than the 1.5% estimated by the European Commision based on the EU short-term outlook.
The decrease is primarily attributed to Covid-19 and the impact that it has had on demand from the foodservice and retail sectors.
Looking at sheepmeat production figures in more detail which were gathered by Eurostat, Spain saw the biggest decrease in production.
Spain, which was the largest producer of sheepmeat in the EU last year, produced 114,320t of sheepmeat – down 7,020t from 2019’s figure of 121,340t.
