Community and the spirit of Meitheal remain strong in Westport despite extended lockdown, according to local priest
As the present Level of Covid Restrictions are to be extended out until the 5
th of March, the Administrator in Westport, Fr Charlie McDonnell says community and the spirit of “meitheal” in the parish remain strong and there is great hope that these difficult times will pass.
Nonetheless, the current restrictions are hitting funerals and weddings particularly, he explains . With only ten people allowed to attend a funeral Mass, it makes a sad time even more difficult for those who are grieving. Just 6 people can attend a wedding under the present restrictions.

According to the rector, Fr Richard Gibbons, despite putting on extra masses for Christmas, all places are already booked up for every service.
The basilica, which ordinarily accommodates 3,700 people seated, is currently permitted just 200 people in four pods of 50.
But thanks to the extra masses, nearly 1,600 people will be able to attend public worship in Knock over Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.
“There has to be an hour between each mass for cleaning. We have a base of volunteers of about 30 to 40 people,” Fr Gibbons told the
Irish Independent.
At the Cathedral of the Assumption in Carlow, the parish has opted to ticket all Christmas masses this year.
