Celeste was the Sound of 2020, but her debut album has only just arrived
The sultry timbre, smoky tones and jazzy flow of Celeste have a timeless quality, which is probably just as well, since the British singer’s career has been on hold for a year. Having won last year’s Rising Star award at the Brits and topped the BBC Sound of 2020 poll, 26-year-old singer-songwriter Celeste Epiphany Waite was touted as the breakout star of a year in which we all became stuck indoors.
The pandemic has been especially hard on emerging artists: by decimating music’s live sector, it has left them unable to do the tours and promo appearances that bring them to mainstream audiences. Since Celeste’s ascension to the status of pop’s chosen one, we’ve already had another BBC poll, designating rapper-singer Pa Salieu as the Sound of 2021. What becomes of the next big thing when the next big thing comes along?
