Billy Williams unique 4-hit game By JohnW53 on Feb 19, 2021, 4:40am CST +
While batting .290/.361/.492, Williams made
2,510 hits.
Thirty times, he had 4 in a game, including 8 in which he went 4 for 4.
Twice, both in 1969, all 4 of his hits were for extra bases.
On Wednesday, April 9, in the second game of the season, Williams smacked 2 doubles, walked, then smacked 2 more doubles, as the Cubs thumped the visiting Phillies, 11-3.
It was a different story when he did it again, on Friday, Sept. 5, in the opener of a weekend series against the Pirates at Wrigley Field.
....
STRANDED TWICE, CIRCLED TWICE
After Steve Blass retired the first 2 Cubs, Williams doubled to center field. Ernie Banks then popped up to end the inning.

Late last year, Major League Baseball announced its intention to declare several Negro Leagues as official big leagues.
Last week, a committee of the Society for American Baseball Research recommended that 7 leagues be recognized: the Negro National League I (1920-31), Negro National League II (1933-48), Negro American League (1937-48), Eastern Colored League (1923-28), American Negro League (1929), East-West League (1932) and Negro Southern League (1932).
MLB also said it would incorporate team and player statistics from the Negro Leagues into the existing records, which include data from the American and National leagues, American Association (1882-91), Union Association (1884), Players League (1890) and Federal League (1914-15).
Half-lives of Cubs championship teams By JohnW53 on Jan 31, 2021, 7:04am CST 4
45 players: 20 position players and 25 pitchers.
If the 2021 season began today, only
6 of those 45 still would be a Cub: Javier Baez, Kris Bryant, Willson Contreras, Jason Heyward, Anthony Rizzo and Kyle Hendricks, the lone remaining pitcher.
Remarkably, 2016 was the final season with the Cubs for
21 of those 45 players: 7 position players and 14 pitchers.
The position players who did not return in 2017 included 2 who had appeared in at least half of the team s games in 2016: outfielders Dexter Fowler (125) and Jorge Soler (86).
Among the departed pitchers were starter and 15-game winner Jason Hammel (30 games) and frequent relievers Travis Wood (77) and Trevor Cahill (50).
