Awakening to a picture-perfect autumn day on the Auckland waterfront, the Waitematā Harbour’s glossy turquoise sheen gleamed in the soft, sun-kissed morning calm. I had a hot date with the crowning jewel of the Hauraki Gulf. A full day’s adventures awaited me on Waiheke Island, a blissed-out beach and bush bolt-hole, where beauty and bounty abound. It’s an island cohabited by unlikely bedpals, where seasoned bohemians reside cheek by jowl with the moneyed of Auckland. Needless to say, Waiheke’s local showdowns are legendary.
The Waiheke eBike experience began at the ferry terminal, where my travel companion and I were picked up by Mark Seavill, owner of the family-run Waiheke Bike Shop. His eBiking business had been going strong prior to March 2020, but the isolation restrictions threw a spanner in the works. Kiwis prefer to holiday on weekends, so without international visitors, local tourism operators like his have gone from seven to two days-a-week businesses. It’s a tough time to be in the tourism industry. That being said, the interest in eBiking is clearly there. When we arrive at the shop there are already some eager cyclists getting ready for a day of exploring the island.

Terra and Tide owner Gabrielle Young summed up our tour with that very sentence, as we cruised around Waiheke Island s northern shores.
When I lived in Auckland for 18 months, I never went to the island, despite the 35-minute ferry ride from the CBD being shorter than many of my car trips with flatmates to various parts of the city.
