you ve recovered from the celebration last night. but we want to hear more about that too. first, you re writing this weekend, you and your colleagues at the washington post, that this is the republican party of law and order attacking the fbi, attacking the justice department in a way that we ve never seen before. so there s been a role reversal of the two political parties. it could have consequences, andrea, in this year s midterm elections. speaking to someone from the philadelphia suburbs, brian fitzpatrick, who s a freshman running in a tough district, talking to charlie denton, retiring from the philadelphia area, they all say the republicans turn against the department of justice, against the fbi, could make some suburban voters in places like pennsylvania weary of the gop this year. they wonder if there s a cost to pay as they continue to try to support the president amid this probe. and i also wanted to bring to all of your attention the president s intervention just
leading is hard, that is what we re elected to do. leaving caucus allowed me to be a more effective member of congress and work for the people of texas. and other hand have you moderate republicans from pennsylvania. charlie denton who said it time for both sides to get together. there is a great opportunity now, to agree on some bipartisan reforms, i have talked with many democrats in the house who acknowledge real problem. there are people on left who love obamacare, but they know it has problems, you have people who detest obamacare, and know parts will be retained. that that should be the basis for start of the discussion. eric: do you think that, next be applied to taxes and other issues, with debt ceiling and budget. it could be applied to
shannon: all right this is supposed to go to a vote. the house rules committee gets this to a vote that wasn t resolved either. do you still think thursday is the day for a vote? i don t know the timing on this but i know we re getting very close. i know we still have work to do to make sure members concerns are heard and we re always improving this bill so let s just keep working. after seven years finish in a strong way. it s important we get it done. shannon: the president we re told will meet with members of the freedom caucus at 11:30 this morning but when you have moderate republicans who say every time you make a concession to them we re less likely to vote and charlie denton said with the changes i can t vote for it. how do you keep everything so you contain enough you get to 216 if that s still the number?
group in the white house and caucus, is centrist. that is what paul ryan is dealing with. i mentioned charlie denton, he said you re going to lose the tuesday group and me if you do that. that s why when trump says these guys are voting yes, they a lot of times vote no. there is a chance it won t get out of the house unless they want to keep it going and want to keep the process going. this is before today s event but the feeling that he has and other members of the house freedom caucus have on the bill has not changed. this is raul labrador yesterday. most people are opposed to the bill, it s interesting because it s from the right and the left. there is no natural constituency for this bill, which is one of the most frustrating things about this bill because we re trying to figure out who exactly it s trying to appease because the left is really mad about t
for cruz. and, you know, trump won. so, you had this huge base of support for trump within the republican party. then you have people like charlie denton and others, bob dole, who can t stand donald trump and whose constituents can t stand tth trump. paul ryan, you just have to make sure your constituencies do what they can do. paul s trying to manage it. it s not an easy thing. donald trump is looking for any opportunity to run against the political establishments of both parties because he s portraying himself as an agent of change. and the republican establishment is more than happy to distance themselves from trump at the same time. it does work with his base, though, what he did sunday night to bring the women out, to go after bill and hillary clinton. that seems to be working with the base, but it s backfiring with the larger electorate where he needed to move, correct? well, i think that s exactly right.
