Alfred Dewayne Brown, 33, was convicted of capital murder and sentenced to death in October 2005. After 12 years imprisoned, his conviction was overturned after the discovery of evidence substantiating his alibi.Marie D. De Jesus, Staff / Houston Chronicle
There may be no worse act a government can commit against one of its citizens than to sentence him to death for a crime he did not commit.
But in the case of Alfred Dewayne Brown, the state of Texas has been tireless in its efforts to outdo itself.
Friday, at long last, brought mercy. The Texas Supreme Court did the right thing to end this state’s shameful campaign to deny an innocent man justice. We applaud the decision. We condemn those who did everything they could to stand in its way.
