Larry Walker Jr. had some big shoes to fill when he arrived at the Express-News in 1990.
Walker was hired to replace retiring San Antonio institution Charles O. Kilpatrick as publisher and CEO of the newspaper, which was then in the final throes of an epic battle with the San Antonio Light.
The new guy in town proved to be up to the task.
The Hearst Corp. closed the Light and bought the Express-News from Rupert Murdoch in 1993, giving Walker the job of presiding over the end of the newspaper war and the merger of the previously battling organizations.
