Consider the 115-year legacy of the Rose Parade: The New Year's Day spectacle has endured the Depression, wars, detractors, bomb threats, no queen, no theme even the rise of the parodic Doo-Dah Parade.
The stadium was initially built as a horseshoe designed similar to the open-ended Yale Bowl in New Haven, Conn. Several hundred fans on that Jan. 1 decided against buying tickets and took advantage of the temporary gate in the open end. These cheapskates rushed the gate, knocked it over and faded into the crowd, taking over vacant seats.
Urban planners failed to anticipate street racing and peel-outs at the 6th Street Viaduct, like they failed to plan for traffic on California's first freeway.
