DES MOINES â The leader of the stateâs Occupational Safety and Health Administration has advised top legislative leaders to take better measures to protect employees who work at the Iowa Capitol from being exposed to COVID-19.
In a hazard alert letter to Senate Majority Leader Jack Whitver, R-Ankeny, House Speaker Pat Grassley, R-New Hartford, and other top legislative officials, Iowa OSHA administrator Russell Perry said a Jan. 26 inspection at the Capitol did not turn up a COVID-19 violation but did raise concerns âof the potential for employee illnesses related to exposure to the coronavirus.â
Nonetheless, the inspection did turn up a âseriousâ electrical safety violation, in addition to lesser infractions, and legislative leaders have agreed to pay a $5,219.50 fine.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) A labor union representing state workers has filed a complaint with the state Occupational Safety and Health Administration, arguing that a lack of a mask mandate at the Iowa Capitol threatens the safety of everyone who enters the building.
Iowa Federation of Labor AFL-CIO President Charles Wishman said in a letter sent to Republican leaders of the House and Senate on Thursday that their refusal to enact or enforce a mandatory mask policy shows a lack of concern about the coronavirus pandemic that “is a blatant avoidance of the seriousness of this pandemic and has accelerated the spreading of it.”
