Pegram plans 45th Independence Day celebration after COVID-19 cancelled 2020 event

Pegram plans 45th Independence Day celebration after COVID-19 cancelled 2020 event Preparations are underway for Pegram’s 45th annual Independence Day Celebration as the town’s events committee recently met to begin planning this year’s entertainment, food and activities. Last year’s celebration was initially postponed, then eventually cancelled, following the area’s COVID-19 impact and positive case count. This year’s theme, “Pegram Surviving, Thriving and Rising Together,” came about as a direct result of the pandemic, its impact on the community over the last year and lasting effects, something Leah Louallen hopes will lift everyone’s spirits. “I think everybody’s had a tough year,” Louallen said. “I think the people in this area really do thrive, and they do it because they create such a community atmosphere, and I really feel that about our community.”

US company "cancels" first black product spokesperson

US company “cancels” first black product spokesperson Nancy Green is a name you’ve probably never heard but should have. Nancy Green (1834-1923) was American’s first product spokesperson. In fact, she was the world’s first living advertising trademark. And she was black. Born a slave in Kentucky, Green was a servant, nanny, housekeeper, and cook for the family of Charles Morehead Walker. She also served the Walker family’s next generation in Chicago. In 1893, Green was hired by the R.T. Davis Milling Company in St. Joseph, Missouri. She was 59 years old. On the recommendation of Judge Walker, Green was chosen to represent the advertising character “Aunt Jemima.” The Davis Milling Company was renamed Aunt Jemima in 1914.
