manhole cover exploding into the air and hitting a moving car? there are real concerns about what caused that explosion. news 4 s jackie benson is in wheaton with more. reporter: after hours of investigation, the cause of today s events here is still a mystery. utility company employees worked into the evening, trying to figure out what caused an underground explosion here. around noon, a verizon manhole cover that can weigh as much as 100 pounds went airborne. it crashed through the window of a mercedes and struck the driver in the face. it happen eed in wheaton. around 2:00 p.m., montgomery county police officers investigating that incident noticed something alarming. they basically reported they had an odor they could not identify. they requested that the fire rescue response along with our hazardous materials team. hazt crews arrived about, 20 people were evacuated from nearby homes. 70 others were told to wait inside. it was chaos out here, i m not sure what s gn
