We value education, community, and preservation. Based upon our value system, we have developed a museum that is a collaborative effort with the adams county historical society, civil war trust, land conservancy of adams county, and Evergreen Cemetery association and center for civil war photography. We officially opened in may of 2015, and we count the battle of gettysburg story from a new perspective, one that focuses on both the military aspects as well as the civilian perspective. Beyond the museum, we do offer additional programming focus to for both the general consumer and the scholar. In addition to book talks such as today, you can experience our living history programs every weekend. And we have a saturday spotlight series where we have Educational Programs in the evenings. Preservation, we think about something staying the same. Yet preservation changes things. So thats the focus were going to aim at today. In the context of open space lands here in the u. S. Where often theres this presumption that Public Ownership is the best way to protect a landscape. We even see the miniseries by ken burns from a ways back on National Parks. It was called americas best requested which was taken from a quote from wallace stigner. That natural spaces that have trails for hiking and sightseeing and so on are representative of pure, pristine nature thats had some boundary put around it and its been kept a same like a vase in museum. Just kind of static and never changing. That literally is part of the founding legislation for the National Park service which was written and passed by congress in 1916. The Park Service Just had their centennial last year, lots of hoopla. And so you can see that their fundamental purpose is to conserve scenery and provide for the enjoyment

When i came back to the world i wrote the first vietnam lawful posted by a and infantrymen which was nominated for the National Book award and the National Endowment for the arts fellowship. From there, i began writing about vietnam and south asia for the New York Times, the Atlantic Monthly and the new republic. From there somehow ended up in the Foreign Service and was at the embassy is in pakistan and venezuela come and then did another vietnam novel called Hamburger Hill i
