Roundtable. Julie hyman and chief markets correspondent scarlet fu look at todays acrosstheboard drop in the u. S. Equity markets. Julie, let me begin with you. Is this weatherrelated . It is fundamentalrelated. People around the city talked about whether they were fully staffed and said they were. Many had spent the night in the hotel and came into the office or were telecommuting from home. It seems as though volume is a normal levels. People are focusing on the news at hand and that news is largely negative. At least if youre looking at corporate news. We had a number of earnings reports after the close yesterday and early today that came in below estimates. There were a couple of important tracks things to blame, if you will, for these reports. One is the drop in commodity prices. Caterpillar blamed their drop on disappointing orders from clients in oil and gas industry notably. Caterpillar shares have been trading down. We have seen a slide in copper and gold prices as well. Repor
World is so poor, when just one week of military expenditure can bring all children to classrooms. I refuse to accept that all the laws and constitutions and police and judges, are unable to protect our children. I refuse to accept that the slavery can be stronger than freedom. I refuse to accept here. My only aim in life is that every child is free to be a child. Free to grow, free to eat, sleep, and see the light. Free to love and laugh and cry. Free to play and learn. Free to go to school. And tree to dream. I have the privilege of working with many courageous people, who have the same aim. We have never given up on any threat or attack, we will never. We have made progress in a couple of year, couple of decades. We have reduced the number of out of School Children by half. We have reduced the number of child laborers by a third. We have reduced child mortality, malnutrition, and we have prevented millions of child deaths. But let us make no mistake, the great challenges still remai
[ applause ] [ speak being foreigning Foreign Language ] [ speaking Foreign Language ] friends, Noble Committee inviting me to present a lecture. Respectfully, i am unable to do that, because i am presenting here, the sound of silence. The cry of innocence, and the face of invisibility. Those children who are left behind. Thats why, i have kept an empty chair as to remind us. As a reminder. I have come here only to share the voices and dreams of our children. Because they are all our children. I have looked into their frighteppfrigh frightened and exhausted eyes. I have held their injured bodies and have felt their broken spirits. 20 years ago, in the foot hills, a small, skinny child. He asked me, is the world so poor, instead of forcing me to take a gun. A child soldier that was kidnapped boy an extremist militia. As his first lesson, he was forced to kill his friends and family. He asked me, what is my fault . 12 years ago, a child murder from the streets of colombia, trafficked, an
Utility partners in building more gas but still worried about those price shocks and they see keeping coal in the mix is one of the ways that they can avoid those kinds of shocks as part of what they do. Last thing i will say, of course, is thats the United States story. In other countries, coal is much more prevalent and the availability of gas much more limited. So, from a global perspective, we certainly see coal as an important player, not just in the United States or not just in north america but many parts of the world. Hi, Charles Ebinger from brookings. Julio, it seems to an outsider that the administration a bit schizophrenic on ccs and coal, in general, because the one hand, we have the excellent would, that you have highlighted the doe is doing, the other hand, we look at the organizations like opec, xn bank, so forth, as well as our positions in financial institutions, we seem to take a very negative attitude toward financing coal in other localities. Could you make a comme
Everybody. Things likes showcase projects for example in this country or in others. Also International Partnerships can accelerate the learning, sharing. Can accelerate deployment. We dont have to build five kinds of plants in five Different Countries if we can just build one plant in one country and share the results, it saves money and saves time in a very useful way. The International Landscape is also changing dramatically. Im sure many of you here watched the u. S. china accord that was announced in november. We were all very, very pleased with this. It includes, among other things, a large ccs project in china and a science project that is a joint International Project shared by the United States, china, and other nations. Were thrilled with this outcome. Theres also a new kind of project that the chinese are going to pilot, an enhanced Water Recovery project. Like enhanced oil recovery except pulling out oil you pull out brines and you use the pressure youre using in injection t
