This is the first in an irregular multi-author series, “Our Hidden History: Race and ethnicity in Rhode Island.” Yesterday marked the 235th Independence Day parade in Bristol, “the most patriotic town in America.” Residents are justly proud of this elaborate tradition, held despite wars, depressions, and now pandemics. But patriotism can mean many things. The town’s early history emphasizes independence itself, not support of the federal government.
